The Reserves entertained
Cliftonville Olympic on Thursday night at a wet
and blustry Clandeboye in the George Wilson Cup
Group stages.
Cliftonville started brightly and dominated the opening exchanges, taking the lead in the tenth minute when poor marking from a corner allowed their center forward a free header 10 yards from goal. Bangor responded and the industrious Anto Walsh started to drive the team forward from the middle of the park. Johnny Tumelty hit the post from ten yards following a great run and cross from the impressive Ryan Tumelty. Walsh then failed to hit the target on 2 occasions from the edge of the area when he worked himself into good positions and then just before half time McDowell missed from 5 yards when it seemed easier to score, the ball rebounding to him quickly from the keeper. Bangor started the second half as they ended the first with very good chances falling to Johnny Tumelty and Gary Sharratt in the opening fifteen minutes of the half. At this point it looked only a matter of time before Bangor would get an equaliser and it was felt if they could score one they could go on and win the game. However disaster struck after 65 minutes when Cliftonville broke to score their second when poor marking allowed the Cliftonville forward time and space to collect a cross and pick his spot from ten yards. Worse was to follow as Cliftonville increased their lead within 60 seconds. Carnduff got caught in possession 20 yards from his own goal and the Cliftonville forward pounced on this error by clinically hitting into the bottom left hand corner of the net. Cliftonville added 2 further strikes towards the end to win the game comfortably 5-0. Best for Bangor was Ryan Tumelty whilst Timmy Ritchie and Craig Holmes did well on the left hand side. "This was a very hard result and performance to take. We didn't start well and were punished but to give our boys credit we dominated for 60 minutes and created at least 5 excellent chances which you would expect to score. We then conceded a poor second goal and the most disappointing part of the night was that too many heads dropped at this stage. We didn't show enough desire, gave up the fight and didn't make Cliftonville work hard enough for the last 20 minutes. It disappoints me to see young players accept defeat. Cliftonville gave us a lesson in the art of finishing - they were clinical. We can't miss chances like we did tonight and then contrive to concede goals and expect to win games." (JB) The reserves next game is again at home to Cliftonville in the league on Monday 13th October with an expected k/o time 7:45pm |
