Bangor cruised through to the next round of the Intermediate Cup with a comfortable three goal victory over Omagh United. After a dour first half, Bangor had Gareth Maguire to thank as he saved a penalty, paving the way for Dean Youle and Wayne Maxwell to score a goal each within a minute. Glen Upton sealed the win with a superb individual goal late on.

The visitors were keen to move the ball about throughout the game, but struggled to create any clear cut chances. Instead it was Andy Rosbotham who had the first chance as he collected McIntyre’s knock down but could only send his right footed effort from 12 yards crashing against the woodwork after 14 minutes.

Moments later Glen Upton raced through to pick up a Whiteside pass, but the forward’s first time volley was excellently pushed onto the post and behind by the visiting goalkeeper. Mark Magennis’ resultant corner kick fell kindly to the unmarked Daley Carnduff, but his curling effort was well headed clear off the goal line.

Omagh United had their best chance of the half on the stroke of half time, but Gareth Maguire was equal to Cunningham’s dipping shot from distance.

Half-time: 0 – 0

Roy McCreadie’s side were gifted a chance to take the lead only a minute after the interval when a rash Marc Whitford challenge resulted in a penalty for the visitors. Sloan stepped up to take the kick, but his effort lacked any power as Maguire dived to his right to push the ball away.
Bangor began to turn the screw, forcing a serious of corners which caused all sorts of bother for the visitors. The third corner was cleared as far as Magennis who returned the ball into the box where the waiting Dean Youle fired a low shot into the net on the hour mark.

Straight from kick off, Bangor won the ball back as Magennis sent a through ball to Wayne Maxwell on the right hand side. The winger composed himself before delicately lifting the ball over the stranded Omagh United ‘keeper and into the back of the net.

Gareth Maguire showed his worth to his side in the 85th minute when he reacted quickly to smoother the ball at the feet of substitute McGlynn as he looked to round the Bangor stopper.

At the other end of the pitch, Glen Upton proved too much to handle for the Omagh defence as the Bangor striker stepped round four defenders before calmly lifting past the keeper to seal a comfortable win.

Mark Magennis nearly rounded off his fine performance with a goal as he sent a volley from just inside his own half onto the roof of the net with the visiting keeper scrambling to get back to his goal.
