BANGOR F.C. - SEASON 2009-10
KILLYLEAGH YC 4-1 BANGOR (STEEL & SONS CUP ROUND 2)Killyleagh, Saturday 22nd August 2009 A calamitous defensive display from Bangor helped Killyleagh cruise into the next round of the Steel and Sons Cup. By half time the home side were four goals to the good with Bangor totally out of sorts. The second half fight back which the travelling fans might have hoped for never materialised with only substitute Glen Upton grabbing a late consolation goal. Killyleagh took the lead in only the 5th minute when Niall Walsh ghosted past a half hearted challenge from Rosbotham. The defender’s driven cross from the edge of the penalty area seemed to slide off his boot as the ball flew over Maguire and into the top corner of the net. Having already been let off the hook moments earlier, Jim McMenamin was again caught in possession in his own half by Galbraith. The impressive striker stepped forward before sending an inch perfect chip over Maguire and into the net from 25 yards in the 10th minute. Maguire came to his side’s rescue in the 16th minute when he used his body to smartly block Galbraith’s close range effort. Bangor’s only effort on goal arrived in the 21st minute when midfielder Daley Carnduff forced the home ‘keeper into a low save from 18 yards. Galbraith grabbed his second goal of the game in the 34th minute as he raced onto a through ball which Jim McMenamin inexplicably missed. With only Maguire to beat, the Killyleagh man made no mistake as he found the bottom corner. McMenamin’s nightmare was complete in the 37th minute when that man Galbraith got in front of the Bangor defender to head home a left wing cross to seal a remarkable first half hat-trick. Half-time: 4 – 0 Hoping for a stunning second half performance to make amends for the first half efforts, Bangor changed formation and personnel with Rosbotham and Mann making way for Upton and Boyd. But the changes had little impact with Killyleagh scrambling the ball into the net from a corner just after the break only for the referee to rule the goal out for a foul.
Bangor huffed and puffed but struggled to break down a well organised
Killyleagh side who remained comfortable and threatening on the break. Glen Upton came close moments later when his header flew wide of the target. But the striker made amends in the 86th minute when he rose to head Mark Magennis’ pinpoint pass over the stranded keeper. In stoppage time Upton could have doubled his tally but for the woodwork keeping out the substitute’s header.
